We did it! In a sound defeat, 27 moderate and conservative Republicans joined 158 Democrats and 1 Independent Thursday in opposing the Marriage Protection Amendment (previously the "Federal Marriage Amendment") on the House Floor. Your Representative voted against amending the Constitution - click here to send a thank you note now.
Since the discriminatory constitutional amendment was first proposed last February, voters saw the proposal for what it is: a cynical political ploy to distract voters from the enormous foreign policy and domestic challenges facing America.
The House cast its vote on this divisive and sensational amendment just hours before the first Presidential debate in Florida where President Bush will be forced to defend his administration's record in Iraq. We won this historic victory for two reasons: First, because the politics of division don't work, and second: because of you.
The campaign to defeat this amendment has been a top priority for HRC and only with your amazing efforts over the course of many months, did we win this round of the fight. For that, we can not thank you enough.

Since your Representative voted NO on the Marriage Protection Amendment, they voted against constitutional discrimination of all GLBT Americans. Their vote ensured that the ultra-conservatives did NOT get the 2/3 majority they needed to pass this amendment (the final vote was 227 for, 186 against).
Now more than ever it is critical to support Representative John Dingell and let him/her know you appreciate their vote. The right wing is sure to use this against them. Please let your Representative know that you are grateful for their vote!
